Thanks to artist Stephan Erasmus for “moving the reader into an experience of struggle and involvement in the detanglement of the text and the significance of the selected encryption method or construction” – although not his original intent, for me this description also captures the experience of joining a loved one on the journey of learning to communicate together through the scrambled labyrinth of Wernicke’s aphasia. I remember a few weeks ago Andrew asking me how soon he could come home to Victoria street where we live, by saying “Queen Victoria, nine months?” This beautiful work is currently in Johannesburg, water colour on paper, 2018, frame 485 x 485, sheet 350 x 350, reserve price of R7500, 50% to the Andrew Swart Support Fund, 50% to the artist.
